Mark Okrant spoke to a gathering of mystery aficionados on Sunday (10/14), at the Concord NH Public Library.
The talk was part of a session organized by the New Hampshire Writers Workshop. Mark described
his late entry into the world of fiction writing, after decades of scholarly writing. He described how he
prepares to create a mystery, his Kary Turnell character, and the importance of settings in his books.
The audience was asked for ideas where the sixth Turnell mystery should be set. More about their
choice later.

No Vacancy: The Rise, Demise, and Reprise of the American Motel
Purchase via Kindle $2.99
No Vacancy looks at the motel era through the eyes of one of New England's senior tourism investigators. The Author Mark Okrant sets the scene with entertaining interviews of motel proprietors and people who took family vacations before the Interstate system dominated the tourism landscape. Alarmed by the rate at which these properties are disappearing from the tourism landscape, Okrant conducts case studies along the old Boston Post Road, Route 66, the Las Vegas Strip, and other classic roads, searching for solutions. In the end, he offers a wide-eyed, yet optimistic view of how to keep these remnants of the 1950's and 60s from turning off their lights forever.
